常寂光寺 · Buddhist temple
The temple records that it was founded in the Keicho era, between 1596 and 1614, by the priest Nisshin, the sixteenth head of Honkoku-ji. It belongs to the Nichiren school. The site on Mount Ogura was chosen for its long association with classical poetry.
The Niomon gate was moved here in 1616 from Honkoku-ji, where it had been built in the fourteenth century. Above it stand the main hall, built with material from the guest hall of Momoyama Castle, the Tahoto pagoda from the temple's founding years, the belfry of 1642, and the Myokendo hall.
