The Japan National Tourism Organization records that Ishiteji is one of the temples of Shikoku's 88 Temple Pilgrimage, and that it is said to have been built in honour of Kukai. The Shikoku 88 Sacred Sites Association records that the temple was first called Annyo-ji and took the name Ishite-ji in 892.
The association names the main hall, the three-storied pagoda, the bell tower and the Gomado among the temple's Important Cultural Properties. Ehime Prefecture's guide records a separate charge for the treasure hall.
