Kitain Temple's own English site records that the temple's history is thought to have begun when the monk Ennin founded Muryojuji Temple in 830.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the temple's bell tower gate as an Important Cultural Property of the mid-Edo period.

The temple's English site says the admission changes during its special exhibition, which is held every year from late April to early May.
